Deciding on what to spend their C$1m ($795,000; £572,000) lottery winnings on was not a problem for a Mr and Mrs Bill Pendergast: finish off rebuilding and furnishing their home in Fort McMurray, Alberta Canada which was destroyed by a devastating wildfire in 2016. How devastating? The blaze was so huge and so fierce that it was given the nickname the “Beast” after 10% of all structures in the town were lost. Two years on and it appears the hand of fate was very much at work in the Pendergast’s win. For it was while he was visiting his sick father in Newfoundland that 50 year old Bill bought the winning Lotto 6/49 ticket. What’s more he only popped into the local petrol station to get a “cold 7 Up” drink for Mr Pendergast senior before he decided to buy the ticket on a whim. The rest as they say is history. As well as their house, the couple plan to jet off for a warm holiday, while Mr Pendergast intends to realise his dream and buy a Mustang. “This is all like a dream”, said Mr Pendergast. It seems the Beast has finally been tamed.
