Waste collectors must come across a huge array of weird and whacky things during their working day… but a 30cm lizard which was found inside a cardbox box without any air holes or food must rank as one of the most bizarre. It’s a mystery how the bearded dragon ended up in the box outside a house in Bridgwater, Somerset but the reptile has the Somerset Waste Partnership to thank for its new found freedom, albeit at the Secret World animal rescue centre. Mr Cater from the SWP said “It’s not what we normally find in our boxes…People take strange things to our recycling centres like live grenades because they don’t know what else to do with them…We don’t know why somebody left it in there, it’s nothing to do with the house it was left outside so we can only speculate that someone has abandoned it or it escaped perhaps.” The lizard will remain at Secret World before it is handed over to the RSPCA who will be responsible for its future. Secret World’s Josie Nott said “The box had no air holes, and inside was a lot of screwed up newspaper and under all of that was the bearded dragon sat at the bottom. No food or water was given inside that box.” It seems the lizard however is now making up for lost time: living off a mixture of cucumbers, lettuce, peppers and as a special treat, meal worms. Well not much of a treat for the meal worms.
