When Jane Dickinson took her pet dog Maisy to the vet for an operation to remove her spleen, she feared the worst. For after a CT scan had showed the St Bernard had a very full stomach as well as a sinister looking mass on her spleen, vet Nick Blackburn from Paragon Veterinary Referrals believed the eight year old could be suffering from cancer. So imagine Ms Dickinson’s relief when during the operation, the vet found not one but four soft toys in Maisy’s stomach. As the Wakefield-based vet said, “this was not something we were expecting to find. We all know certain dogs enjoy chewing things they shouldn’t but managing to devour four full teddy bears is quite a feat”. After removing the offending teddies, Maisy has since made a full recovery from the operation and what’s more tests have confirmed that she does not have cancer. As for whose teddies Maisy had stolen, it turns out they belonged to Ms Dickinson’s Chihuahuas, “She will steal the Chihuahuas’ toys and play with them but I’ve never seen her trying to chew them,” said Ms Dickinson. “Her eating habits had been completely normal. When Maisy went in I did think ‘is she coming out?’ But she is loving life now. It’s like she’s got her youth back.” Talk about biting off more than she could chew.
