The mysterious case of the missing underwear in Burton-on-Trent has been solved after the perpetrator was caught red-pawed with the stolen items. The thief is none other than a pet cat which goes by the name of Mowgli. The motive it seems was to lavish its owner, a Ms Leila Walley, with gifts. The ‘gifts’ turn out to be items of clothing including socks, gloves and underwear, which the five year old moggy leaves at Ms Walley’s front door. The 39 year old production operative has no idea where the clothes come from, but she believes Mowgli picked up his bad habit after he was stolen himself when he was just three months old. Ms Walley explains: ‘I lived at another address and during my time there Mowgli was stolen. He was missing for three months, then I got him back and kept him in the house for a while. When I started to let him out he would bring me back carrier bags of tissues, chips papers and all sorts.’ But what started as all sorts soon became clothing. Ms Walley continued: ‘The first time he brought me an item of clothing was six months ago in October last year. I found all these clothes at the back door but I didn’t think it was Mowgli at the time -I thought it might have been the neighbours’ kids leaving the clothes…I haven’t a clue where he gets them from. Some days it will be nothing and some days it will be three or four items of clothing…He’s just a bit mischievous and surprising really. I put all the clothes in a box and I’m just waiting for someone to claim them, I think someone out there must be getting short on their washing.’ So if you happen to live in Burton-on Trent and you are missing an item or two of clothing, it might be worth getting in touch with Ms Walley.
