Superman spotted in Chile. Not the Superman of the comics and movies who catches people falling off high rise buildings for fun. But a Mr Richard Joseph, who incredibly saved a woman from what would most likely have been an instant death by ‘catching’ her after she fell from a ninth floor apartment balcony. Mr Joseph first saw the woman when he stepped off a bus in Independencia, a community to the north of Chile’s capital Santiago. Without a thought for his own well-being, the real life superman positioned himself underneath the balcony so that he could break the woman’s fall with his own body. Incredibly, both survived the impact, though the pair suffered serious injuries and were quickly rushed to hospital for treatment. Mr Joseph however was well enough to provide an account of what happened to Chilean daily La Tercera: ‘I saw the lady hanging out the widow, saying things I couldn’t hear well. At first I took my mobile and started to record like others but then I realised it wasn’t the moment to film but to think how I could help that lady. I decided to try to cushion her fall although I didn’t think I would actually save her but I wanted to stop her head from hitting the ground. I concentrated because I knew she’d be heavy and when she reached my arms, the force of her fall bent my legs under me and we fell to the ground. I didn’t think about the danger for me.’ Mr Joseph suffered injuries to a knee, foot and arm but luckily for him he will not have to foot the bill for his treatment: Chilean businessman and philantrophist Leonardo Farkas pledged to contribute nearly £2,500 towards his medical costs. Superman would be proud.
