From Russia With Love
The late great manager of Liverpool Football Club, Bill Shankly, once said: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” The Danish squad at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia would appear to disagree. For the squad all clubbed together to pay for a private jet so that one of their own, defender Jonas Knudsen, could fly home to Denmark to see his new-born daughter for the first time after his wife gave birth several weeks earlier than expected. Speaking about the unscheduled trip, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said: “We wanted to look at the human side. There are lots of fathers in the squad. You have to remember we are human beings as well as footballers. As a father myself I cannot imagine how hard it was for Jonas getting that message and not being there. We wanted to do anything for him to see his daughter.” After spending time with his family, the 25 year old returned to Russia in time for the team’s match against Australia. Despite Denmark eventually being knocked out of the tournament on penalties, we still think the Great Danes are winners one and all.
