In what could have come straight out of a Hollywood movie, a couple were rescued from an uninhabited island off the coast of Queensland, Australia after they wrote huge letters spelling out the word “HELP” in the sand. What started out as a fishing trip around Percy Islands, turned into a dramatic rescue after the weather took a turn for the worse and forced the pair to take shelter. According to the Daily Record, the couple anchored their five metre dinghy in low water near one of the tiny islands. Unfortunately the storm smashed their boat onto the rocks, leaving the castaways with no choice but to camp on the island overnight. As well as writing “HELP” on the sand, they activated an emergency beacon which was picked up by a search and rescue team. The couple were later picked up by a helicopter and, apart from a few cuts and bruises, emerged from their ordeal unscathed. As for the island they were marooned on…it was the appropriately named Avoid Island. If only they had known that before they set off on their fishing trip.
