Home Is Where The Heart Is
Cupid can strike anyone, anytime, anyplace. Just ask Emmy Abrahamson. For the 41 year old children’s author fell head over heels in love with a stranger who approached her on a street in Amsterdam in 2006. Not only was Mr Vic Kocula a complete stranger but at the time he was homeless and dependent on alcohol. But that was not enough to deflect Cupid’s arrow from hitting its mark. Speaking to This Morning television programme, Ms Abrahamson recalled the moment she first met Mr Kocula, ‘Straight away I could see he was homeless because he was very dirty and so were his hands and fingernails. He was holding a briefcase which I thought only crazy people did, and later on I found out that’s where he held his sleeping bag and cans of beer. We started chatting and I realise he had the most beautiful brown eyes I’d ever seen and he made me laugh straight away.’ It turns out Mr Kocula, who is originally from America, had been backpacking across Europe but ran out of money. He ended up living on the streets and begging for money to get by. ‘The wheels fell off and the alcoholism kicked in heavy. It was such a gradual turn that one day I realised: “Oh my God, I’m a homeless alcoholic”‘, revealed Mr Kocula. The pair ended up chatting for ten minutes and despite his appearance and circumstances, Ms Abrahamson was smitten and the couple arranged to meet the following week for a romantic picnic. All was going well until Ms Abrahamson had to return to her home in Vienna. ‘I didn’t know if I was going to see him again but I couldn’t stop thinking about him’, added Ms Abrahamson. Before she left however, Ms Abrahamson gave Mr Kocula her number. Good job she did, as Ms Abramson explains: ‘Three weeks later [in Vienna], I’d just turned 30, and I got a phone call from Vic who said “I’m here now”, and we’ve been together ever since.’ Fast forward to today and Mr Kocula is now an electrical engineer, while Ms Abrahamson has written a book called How to Fall in Love With a Man Who Lives in a Bush, which chronicles their romantic fairy tale. What’s more the couple have been happily married for ten years and have six year old twins called Desta and Til. Job done Cupid.
