Emily Rycroft is living proof of the power of social media. When the 21 year old student found herself locked inside Brighton University after going inside to collect an essay, her first instinct was to phone her mother Gillian, who then pressed social media into action by tweeting Radio 2 celebrities Jo Whiley and Jeremy Vine. The popular DJs then retweeted her appeal for help which eventually reached a member of the university’s security staff who had a key to the building. Thanks to the twitteratti, Ms Rycroft’s incarceration inside the building was limited to just a couple of hours when it could have been a whole lot worse. What better place is there for an impromtu social experiment than the hallowed halls of a university?
