In November 2017, a Mr Andrew Cotton broke his back while surfing a 60 foot wave at Nazare in Portugal. Fast forward to today and just seven months later, the professional surfer is back in the water catching waves. Not 60 foot giants, more like 2 footers, but as the 38 year told BBC South West: “It’s like starting all over again, I feel like when I used to go surfing when I was 13”. It goes without saying it is a remarkable achievement that Mr Cotton is back tackling the surf in such a short space of time, particularly as he fractured part of his lumbar spine in Nazare and required seven months of hospital treatment and physiotherapy to recover from his injury. As for returning to the big waves of Portugal: “Deep down I’ve not said I’m not going to go back, but it’s one step at a time. It’s good to be back in the water, and the next goal now is get back to Nazare and some big waves”, said Mr Cotton. Be sure to wrap yourself up in lots of Cotton wool Mr Cotton!
