Road Trip 2.0
In what must be some kind of record three men have finally completed a road trip they started way back in September 1960. It was not long after they graduated from Cambridge University that the three septagenarians, Mike Andrews, Martin Hugh-Jones and Ben Mackworth-Praed set out on the 40,000 mile trip from the southern tip of Argentina to the US state of Alaska in a 1960 Series 2 Landrover. Using the Pan-American highway they passed through 17 different countries during their adventure but when they got to Fairbanks Alaska in December 1961 they ran out of road and were prevented from completing the last 500 mile leg of their epic journey to Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Coast by the harsh Alaskan winter. When the three adventurers had to sell their trusty old Land Rover to pay for their flights home, it seemed that was the end of that. Then in 2010 the current owner of the Land Rover read an article about the trip and recognised the expedition logo on the side of his vehicle. Five years on, with the car restored to its former glory, the three men flew back to Alaska to complete their journey. Mr Andrews said “It was amazing, not just to be at the wheel of our old vehicle again, but with my original companions to complete the final leg of our voyage.” Now that’s what you call finishing the job.
