With the end of the summer holidays in sight, students around the world will soon be setting off to university for the new term. But for two French students, Paul Salomon and Clement Chanville, the trip back to college began as early as the middle of August. Not because they are keen to get started (though that might well be the case) but because they are making the 1,242 mile journey on vintage mopeds, Peugeot 103s to be precise. The two nineteen year olds from south-eastern France are due to study engineering at Lews Castle College UHI in Stornoway on Lewis. They hope to reach their destination in time for term but intend to take time out to fit in a little sightseeing, including a visit to London. There have of course been unplanned stops when their Peugeots needed a little TLC, but as Mr Saloman said, “We have met a lot of kind people who helped us to make repairs.” That’s what you call a crash course in engineering.
