For the last 13 years a Mr Michael Base has placed a £1 bet twice a day at his local Betfred in Diss, Norfolk. He has become such a regular that when the 72 year old failed to show up at the shop for several days in a row, two members of staff, Jamie Scales and Jack Bell, became concerned for his well-being. So much so that the pair began asking residents in his local area for his address so that they could check up on him. They eventually got the information from a pensioner who knew Mr Base. After knocking on his door and getting no answer, Mr Scales decided to call the police. And it was a good job he did for Mr Base had collapsed inside and had spent the previous four days in a diabetic coma. He has since made a recovery after receiving treatment at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where he spent a month on a drip, but Mr Base is in no doubt as to who saved his life, “I don’t think Jamie and Jack saved my life – I know they did. I don’t really know how I ended up on the floor in a coma at home but it was obviously to do with my diabetes. I was only a few yards from my tablets but couldn’t reach them.” As for Mr Scales, he said: “I’m just so happy he’s all right and that I got there on time.” Good to see the gamble of a lifetime paid off.
