An All Star

An All Star

An All Star

Luol Deng has for years bounced the basketball for Britain.  Not only has he completed 12 seasons in the NBA, he is the only British player to have played on the All-star team which is drawn from the League’s best players.  But it could have all turned out so differently and Britain could still be searching for its first All-star, for Deng came to London as a refugee via Egypt and the South Sudan where he was born.  “To be a refugee growing up, I never knew where I would end up or where my family would end up,” said Deng.  “I looked at it as the UK did save my family’s life.”  As a teenager he moved to the US where he learned his trade in college before joining the Chicago Bulls and later the Miami Heat where he is now.  As well as entertaining the thousands of supporters who regularly turn out to watch him and his team play, Deng is doing his bit to help his sport and young players back in Britain.  He was part of the GB team that played at the London Olympics in 2012, and he has set up a basketball school of excellence in Brixton.  As the NBA star explains “Basketball could be another outlet which gives these kids a future and give these kids a dream and something to go after.  There’s a lot of kids that are so talented, but they don’t have the support that they need.”  Looks like he’s onto something but he may have to jump through a few more hoops to get what he wants and who would bet against him?
