Portugal may have won the Euro 2016 football championship, but 10 year old Zak McGall could also be considered to be one of the tournament’s winners. For the boy from Ballymena, Northern Ireland, not only got to watch Northern Ireland beat Ukraine but he also got to have a chat with a number of his national team’s football stars including striker Kyle Lafferty, captain Steven Davis, Aaron Hughes and Josh Magennis. It all started when footage of Zak’s stunned reaction to receiving his birthday present, tickets to the Euro 2016 match, went viral online. Among those who viewed the film was Kyle Lafferty who was so moved by what he saw that he appealed for the family’s contact information on Twitter so that he could arrange a call with Zak to wish him happy birthday. Zak’s father Richard said “Kyle was in touch really quickly, he’s going to send us a couple of signed jerseys…Initially he wanted to arrange a Facetime call on Saturday, but the team were too busy…But they got it arranged and wished him a happy birthday.” Richard, who coaches Zak as part of Ballymena United’s youth academy, continued “Zak had a ball, he really did. For a wee aspiring footballer, it was incredible.” A future star for Northern Ireland? Remember the name… Zak McGall.
