No Need To Get Shirty
An eight year old boy who had thought he had caught the shirt of Preston North End striker Jermaine Beckford before losing out to another fan, has been given a signed shirt by the three goal hero himself, as well as a personal tour of the football club’s Deepdale stadium. Emotions were running high after Beckford’s hat trick helped Preston beat Swindon 4 -0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley, which saw the Lancashire football club win promotion to the Championship. So it was unsurprising that there was no shortage of takers for the shirt when it was thrown in their direction. When Beckford got wind of the boy’s narrow miss, he promised to meet the eight year old and give him another shirt. So it has all turned out rather well for Ted Dockray, as not only did he get his hands on a shirt but he also got to spend some quality time with his footballing hero. The young fan said “I’m glad I’ve got it. I’m going to hang it in my room.” Jermaine Beckford added “The look on his face when I gave him the shirt… He seemed happy, so I’m happy.” It has also been a remarkable turnaround for Beckford who just four months earlier thought his career was over after a particularly bad case of vertigo left him bed bound. Two for the price of one.
