Many Happy Returns
Congratulations to Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb, a married couple from Egypt who both emerged victorious at the US Open squash championships. Not as you might expect in the mixed doubles competition. Instead they each picked up both the major singles titles on the same day of the tournament, and in the process became the first husband and wife to achieve the remarkable feat in sporting history. Their glorious day began when 24 year old El Tayeb overcame Raneem El Weilly 3-2 in the women’s final and was completed just a few hours later when 25 year old Farag beat Mohamed El Shorbagy 3-0 in the men’s to claim his title. Remarkably, it is the first time either of the couple, who only got married last year, have won a World Series title. “When I finished my match, I just wanted to watch him and I was so nervous,” said El Tayeb. “It’s a dream – I see him every day working hard so it feels really special that both of our first World Series titles happen to be together.” Farag added: “We couldn’t have asked for a better week and I hope it’s the first of many to come together.” What a perfect match.
