Spare a thought for Cortana after Microsoft Windows’ ‘digital assistant’ accidently dialled the wrong number after its boss asked it to dial up the police. When a woman from Barnstaple in North Devon wanted to report a car crash near Muddiford, she asked Cortana to find the number. But when she was put through to the police it turned out she was talking to officers 3,000 miles away in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It took American police officer Mark McWilliams over two minutes before he realised the call was from England. Paul MacDonald, Chief of Police for Barnstable, Massachusetts said “It’s not unusual for us to have tourists or guests from England but this is the first time someone called from England to report a motor vehicle crash.” Meanwhile the woman from Devon saw the funny side “The more I hear it the more I laugh.” The editor ponders do digital assistants blush?
