The Cuban Wide Web
In Cuba it is estimated less than 5% of homes are connected to the world wide web. But that doesn’t mean Cuba is offline. As they say, where there is a will there is a way and Cubans have come up with a solution to overcome internet access issues and receive web content they want… by hand. “El Paquete Semanal” or The Weekly Package provides subscribers with a selection of web content covering topics such as entertainment news and classifieds. It is a terabyte of data which is put together by unknown editors. For those who do not know, a terabyte is a lot of bytes: 1,000,000,000,000 to be precise. Each week, the latest helping is delivered to the homes of its subscribers by hundreds of distributors who then download the Paquete onto home computers using a portable hard drive. Subscribers then choose which bits they want to keep for a fee which varies according to how much content is copied. Job done. A case of the old economy meeting the new.
