Great News
For more than two hundred years the Sunday Independent newspaper has kept the people of Cornwall up to speed with all things to do with sport in the south west but its long run was set to come to an end after news broke that it was to close. Just like one of countless nailbiting finishes to matches that it must have covered over the years, the newspaper won a last minute reprieve after Cornish businessman Peter Masters stepped in to buy the title and in the process save 17 jobs at the publication’s headquarters at Liskeard. “Like so many of our family of readers, I’ve read the Indy every Sunday all my life” said Mr Masters “There was no way I could stand aside and let such a loved and respected part of the West Country sporting scene pass into history.” The paper is set to return to the stands at the higher price of £1.20 compared to the previous 20p but as Editor John Collings, who has worked for the paper since 1988, explains “This… gives us a solid platform to continue and make the Indy even better….We have been simply overwhelmed by the messages of love and affection for the paper and we thank everybody for their support.” Good to see the Indy being given a sporting chance.
