Ever cleared out a kitchen cupboard and found a can or two of old soup tucked away in the back? Someone in the Cardiff area certainly did. For a tin of Heinz kidney soup dating back nearly half a century was donated to Cardiff Foodbank. The soup was so old that the price tag was marked 10 old pennies (10d), the equivalent of roughly 5 new pennies (5p), which suggests it was purchased before 1971. What’s more Heinz stopped producing its kidney soup over 35 years ago. Cardiff Foodbank @CardiffFoodbank tweeted: “It’s a record!! Never had a donation to @CardiffFoodbank with 10d on before! @HeinzUK”. The giant food manufacturer replied: “Wow! That soup was discontinued over 35 years ago. Should be in a museum rather than a food bank! :)” Helen Bull from the food bank said: “People’s hearts are in the right place. Unfortunately when they are clearing out cupboards they do not always check the dates. It will probably still be in date, that’s the funny thing, but will I eat it? Absolutely not.” Think she meant to say “no CAN do”.
