Four Legged Hero
250: that’s how many rescues Ginny, a border collie, has clocked up with the Keswick Mountain Rescue team over the last decade. It ought to come as no surprise that the search and rescue dog has been on more call outs on Cumbria’s fells than any other dog. What’s more these call outs are by no means a walk in the park and require a considerable amount of stamina as they can last for over six hours and even run into days. Ginny’s handler Mick Guy explains the crucial role she plays “isn’t just to find people, it’s also to identify areas where somebody isn’t…You can actually clear an area and you’re able then to say to a team leader, ‘look, I’ve been through this patch of ground and there’s nobody in it’…And that makes the whole business of organising a search a whole lot easier.” Speaking after Ginny’s 250th callout, Mr Guy said “it’s a nice sort of milestone to get to, and given how she worked today, she might just notch up a few more”. Ginny…Cumbria’s best friend.
