In Greek mythology Atlas was a titan who fought against the god Zeus and lost. As punishment he was forced to hold up the heavens. Needless to say Atlas had to be big to serve his sentence. So it seems entirely appropriate that Atlas is the name of a giant rabbit that is the size of a dog. The large bunny just kept on growing and soon became so big that his owner could no longer look after him. The Scottish SPCA animal rescue centre took Atlas in and launched an appeal to find him a new home. They were spoilt for choice after hundreds of people from all over the world including America, Canada and France answered the call. Anna O’Donnell, manager of the Scottish SPCA’s rescue centre in Glasgow, said “It was great there was so much interest in Atlas but we decided to find him a home here in Scotland to avoid a long journey as rabbits are very susceptible to stress.” Atlas’s new owner, who heralds from North Ayrshire in Scotland and has lots of experience looking after rabbits, said “Animals are just pets to some people but my rabbits are family members.” Sounds like Atlas has landed on his feet, all he needs now is an extra large hutch.
