Friends Reunited
It has taken four decades but two World War Two veterans have finally been reunited. 89 year old Bob ‘Bonny’ Parks and 90 year old Herbie Bright became friends while serving together in the Suffolk Regiment from 1944 to 1949, but as the years rolled by they lost contact. Little did they know it but it turns out they were living just a few miles down the road from each other. The breakthrough came when Mr Park’s wife suggested her husband check the local phonebook for his old friend. As Mr Parks’ son Robert explains “He hadn’t seen Herbie for about 40 years. This prompted mum to look in the phone book on the off-chance there might be relatives in Cambridge who might know what had happened to him. Dialling a number for an H Bright, we were amazed to find it was Herbie himself.” A meeting was quickly arranged and, wearing their medals, the two former comrades were soon reunited at Mr Parks’ home in Cambridge. The two old soldiers had served together in Belgium, at the Battle of the Rhine and in Palestine at the end of the British Mandate. With so many shared memories the pair would have had a lot to talk about and then of course there were the 40 years to catch up on…
