From Syria With Love
Back in 2012 chances are Abedul Karou had never heard of Penicuik in Scotland. He certainly does now for not only does he live there with his wife and children after fleeing war-torn Syria, but it was where he was recently reunited with his son Mohamed whom he believed had been killed during a bombing raid five years earlier. It was after Mr Karou and his family had been relocated to Scotland, that word got back from Syria that Mohamed was alive and well. But despite sneaking back into Syria on two occasions, Mr Karou had yet to be reunited with his son. Back in the UK the Karou family turned to their local MP, Owen Thompson, for help. As Mr Karou recalls, his MP took Mohamed’s case to the highest authority in the land, “I won’t forget the moment when our MP stood in the Houses of Parliament calling Theresa May to facilitate bringing my son back.” It worked. After a DNA test proved the now ten year old boy was who they said he was, Mohamed was rescued from Syria and returned to his family. A delighted Mr Karou said “I’m so happy, I cannot describe how happy I am, I’m overwhelmed. It really is a miracle to have him with me now…It’s been a long journey until we discovered he was alive. I would especially like to thank my MP and the Scottish government and every member of the team who got involved in bringing my son to me. If I could carry my MP on my shoulders and have a tour around Midlothian feeling proud of him, I would do it.” The MP said “It really is a brilliant day. We’ve been working on this case for months and to get a positive result, to get young Mohamed to join his family here in Midlothian is just fantastic. When you get involved in politics most people do because you want to help people and this was a situation that was one of the most desperate situations anyone could find themselves in and so to be able to get a positive result is brilliant.” Presumably the MP won’t be getting on Mr Karou’s shoulders.
