Why did the musician jump out of the plane naked, while clutching a violin? To celebrate his 30th birthday and at the same time raise awareness about body issues. Glen Donnelly is a classically trained violinist who has previously played for the London Symphony Orchestra. However when Mr Donnelly began to suffer from body dysmorphic disorder, a condition which causes people to obsess about what they see as defects in their bodies and appearance, he decided to leave Britain in 2013. Since then he has been working with his Nude Movement to raise awareness about body issues. And what better way to do that than to sky dive over the city of Coffs Harbour in New South Wales stark naked apart from a harness and a violin with which to belt out Happy Birthday and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, “It’s this beautiful piece about a bird soaring in the air, and it was just perfect,” he told the BBC. “I played the opening cadenza for about a minute, where you’re just slowly rising on the violin and it was just wonderful. When that parachute opened, I could just be free to play the violin… it was a feeling of total freedom.” As for having pre-jump jitters, the Australian musician had to overcome a double dose of nerves as he explains, “I felt as much fear and anxiety before the sky jump as I feel when I take off my clothes in front of other people – these jolts of fear and anxiety that I’m still working through, I’m really proud of myself for completing the fall and for walking through that door of fear. It’s been a journey for me to come from constantly judging myself from childhood to now, when I’m beginning to not only accept but celebrate myself.” Well done on taking the plunge Mr Donnelly.
