The Bike, The Thief and The Grateful Owner
A cyclist who had her bicycle stolen not only managed to get it back, she also got a handwritten apology from the thief. 55 year old nurse, Eileen Remedios, had left her bicycle outside the home of one of her patients and was stunned to find it was gone when she returned. With nothing to lose, she thought she’d write a note asking for it to be returned and stuck it onto a lamp post close to the scene of the crime. The note read, “Please return my bike. It is old but loved and will be frightened without its owner.” It worked. The next day, Eileen found an envelope under the mat of the home she had visited the previous day. Inside was a card which said “A great big fat…SORRY! From The Reformed Bike Thief! (I didn’t mistreat it).” Along with the card, were two keys to a brand new lock which was being used to secure Eileen’s trusty old bike to a lamppost nearby. A very grateful Eileen, of Brighton, East Sussex, was moved to leave another letter and wrote “To the sweet bike borrower. Thanks for returning my bike. She had a nice time but is delighted to be back with me.”
